What is Mulled Wine ??

Centuries ago, mulled wine emerged as a delightful concoction, tracing its origins to Europe. The Romans are believed to have started the tradition by heating wine to combat the cold winter temperatures. As time progressed, this practice evolved, integrating a variety of spices and herbs to enhance its flavor profile. Today, mulled wine remains a beloved beverage savoured during the winter months, particularly around the festive season.

Mulled wine goes by many names across the globe. Like, spiced wine, vino caliente, glögg, vin brulé, hot wine, vin chaud, candola, and numerous others, reflecting its popularity worldwide. It seems that everywhere you go, people have a soft spot for this warm, spiced wine, and it’s no wonder why!

The preparation of mulled wine typically involves heating red wine with an array of spices such as cinnamon, cloves, star anise, and citrus fruits like oranges or lemons. 3 Helpful Tips Of How to Make the Best Homemade Mulled Wine

  1. Use Quality Ingredients: Begin by selecting a red wine of good quality that you genuinely enjoy drinking solo. It doesn’t need to be the most expensive bottle, but opting for decent quality wine will enrich the final flavor. Also, utilise fresh, high-quality spices, and citrus fruits for maximum flavour infusion. Choose whole spices like cinnamon sticks, cloves, and star anise instead of pre-ground spices for a superior taste.
  2. Avoid Boiling the Wine: When heating the mulled wine, steer clear of boiling it. Opt for gently simmering the wine on low heat. Boiling can cause the alcohol to evaporate and alter the wine’s flavour. It’s crucial to gently warm the wine, allowing the spices and flavours to meld without compromising the wine’s taste or texture.
  3. Let the Flavors Intensify: Once you’ve combined the wine and spices, let the mixture steep or rest off the heat for a while. Allowing this extra time helps intensify the flavours as the spices continue infusing into the wine. Aim to let it sit for approximately 15-30 minutes before serving, ensuring a more robust and flavourful mulled wine.

By following these tips, you’ll craft a delicious mulled wine that’s rich in flavour and perfectly balanced. Adjust the ingredients to your preference, and don’t hesitate to experiment to find the blend that suits your taste buds best!

Ingredients for Easy Homemade Mulled Wine

Before you start, remember these ingredients can be multiplied easily. One bottle of wine makes about five drinks, good for two to four people, and for larger batches, use more bottles accordingly.

Red Wine

The key to this recipe is the wine you choose. There’s no need to spend extravagantly on a bottle. Opt for a quality red wine that in a mid-range bottle. (Alternatively, for larger batches, a nicer boxed wine can also work wonders!) Opt for a fruity and full-bodied wine that can endure the heat without losing its flavour amidst the aromatics. Consider choosing a bottle of Zinfandel, Merlot, or Grenache.

Avoid wines high in tannins like Cabernet Sauvignon or very light ones like Pinot Noir, as they might not blend well with the spices.

Brandy

Similar to sangria, it’s customary to elevate your mulled wine with an additional touch of liqueur. Brandy adds a bit of alcohol content and a warm bite to the mixture. It’s not a lot, so you can skip it if you prefer. While Brandy is the conventional choice, Cointreau (or another orange liqueur) or tawny port are delightful alternatives worth considering.

Fresh Oranges

To make the best spiced wine squeeze the juice of some fresh oranges into the mixture and slice the rest. This is the way to balance different notes of complementary flavours. As oranges are in season during colder months, you’ll find juicy ones easily at the store. Prepare one orange for garnish as well.

Whole spices

For the authentic taste, get whole cinnamon stick, star anise, clove, dried ginger and cardamon pods. They give off that glorious spiced flavour beautifully. Whole spices also keeps for longer in the pantry than ground ones and are great for other recipes like spiced ginger tea or hot toddies.

Sweetener

To harmonise the flavours, incorporate a tablespoon or two of genuine maple syrup or honey. The heat can sometimes intensify the harshness of alcohol’s taste, and these natural sweeteners perform marvelously without overly sweetening the mixture. Tailor the sweetness to your liking. While sugar remains a classic option, I personally favour natural alternatives like maple syrup or honey for imparting flavour to mine.

Garnishes

For an extra festive touch, consider adding some fresh cranberries into the pot just before serving. Moreover, for individual servings, adorn them with additional orange slices, cinnamon sticks, sprigs of rosemary, or star anise. These additions not only elevate the appearance but also add a special charm to the overall presentation.
