There’s nothing quite like the first sip of an Iced Matcha Latte: Ultimate Refreshing Boost. Smooth, creamy, and invigorating, it’s the perfect way to refresh your day. Whether you’re easing into your morning or need a midday pick-me-up, this drink offers a delightful balance of earthy matcha and cool, creamy oat milk. Iced Matcha Latte has become an essential part of my daily routine. It’s my go-to drink for a burst of energy and a moment of calm, whether I’m easing into my morning or taking a much-needed afternoon break. This creamy, invigorating blend of earthy matcha and cool milk (or vegan milk) is more than just a treat—it’s a healthful indulgence packed with natural energy and antioxidants.

The magic of matcha began in Japan, where it’s been celebrated for centuries in traditional tea ceremonies. Recently, it has captivated taste buds worldwide, becoming a beloved menu item in trendy cafés. But making it at home can be just as rewarding—if not more so. By crafting your own Iced Matcha Latte, you gain control over the flavours and ingredients, allowing for personal touches like a hint of vanilla, a splash of strawberry syrup or with white chocolate.

Ready to dive in? Let’s explore how you can easily make this delicious drink at home and make it a part of your daily routine.

Choosing the Right Match For You Ice Matcha Latte

For the perfect Iced Matcha Latte, ceremonial grade matcha is your best option.

  1. Ceremonial Grade Matcha comes from the youngest tea leaves, giving it a vibrant green colour and a naturally sweet, smooth flavour without any bitterness. It blends easily and complements the creamy milk in your latte, making it ideal for a refreshing, balanced drink.
  2. Culinary Grade Matcha is more affordable and works well for cooking and baking, but it has a stronger, slightly bitter taste. While you can use it for lattes if you prefer a more robust flavour, it won’t deliver the same smoothness and sweetness as ceremonial grade.

If you want a smooth, delicious Iced Matcha Latte with no bitterness, go for ceremonial grade—it’s worth the investment for a truly premium drink!

  2. Packed with Antioxidants: Matcha is rich in antioxidants, particularly EGCG, which supports overall health and wellbeing.
  3. Customisable to Your Taste: You can adjust the sweetness, creaminess, and even add flavours. Like vanilla, white chocolate, or strawberry to make it your own.
  4. Cool and Refreshing: The iced version is perfect for warm days, offering a smooth, chilled alternative to hot drinks.
  5. Smooth and Creamy: The combination of matcha and milk (or vegan milk) creates a velvety texture that’s both satisfying and indulgent.

You’ll love this drink for its blend of health benefits, energising qualities, and refreshing, customisable flavour.

What does matcha taste like?

High-quality matcha has a distinctive flavour that’s best described as slightly grassy with a subtle sweetness. It offers delicate vegetal notes, paired with a smooth, creamy texture, all balanced by a natural earthiness. There’s a hint of bitterness, similar to dark chocolate, but it’s also floral and pleasantly “green”—in the freshest, most vibrant sense of the word. This unique combination makes matcha both refreshing and deeply satisfying.

Ingredients Used to Make Ice Match Latte: Ultimate Refreshing Boost

  • Ceremonial Grade Matcha Powder: This high-quality matcha gives the drink its rich, earthy flavour and vibrant green colour. Ceremonial grade ensures smoothness without any bitterness.
  • Hot Water: Use a small amount of hot (not boiling) water to dissolve the matcha powder. This helps you create a smooth, lump-free base.
  • Milk or Plant-Based Milk: Dairy milk adds a creamy texture. But you can easily choose plant-based alternatives like almond, oat, or coconut milk, depending on your preference.
  • Natural Sweetener (Optional): Sweeten your latte with honey, maple syrup, or vanilla syrup. Adjust the sweetness to your taste.
  • Vanilla Extract: Enhances the natural floral and grassy notes of matcha, but it’s completely optional. If you don’t have any on hand, feel free to skip it.
  • Ice Cubes: Add plenty of ice to keep your drink chilled and refreshing.

How to Make Iced Matcha Latte: Ultimate Refreshing Boost

Sift the Matcha: Start by sifting 1–2 teaspoons of ceremonial grade matcha powder into a bowl. Remove any lumps and ensure a smooth mix.

Make the Matcha: In a small matcha bowl (or any small bowl or wide mug that gives you ample room for whisking), combine the sifted matcha and about 60ml of hot water (around 80°C). Use a bamboo whisk to whisk the matcha in a back-and-forth “M” motion for at least 15 seconds, or until it becomes frothy and clump-free. Add your sweetener, such as maple syrup or agave, and whisk until fully incorporated.

Fill Your Glass with Ice: Grab a glass and fill it with ice cubes to chill your drink.

Pour in Cold Milk: Add around 240ml of cold milk (or plant-based milk like almond or oat) over the ice.

Combine and Enjoy: Pour the whisked matcha mixture over the milk and ice. Stir gently to combine, and enjoy your refreshing iced matcha latte!

Helpful Tips and Tricks to Make the Best Iced Matcha Latte

  1. Use Ceremonial Grade Matcha: For a smooth, sweet taste, opt for ceremonial grade matcha. It’s made from the youngest tea leaves, giving you a vibrant green colour and naturally sweet flavour, which is ideal for iced lattes.
  2. Dissolve Matcha in Hot Water: Matcha doesn’t dissolve easily in cold liquid. Start by mixing the powder with a small amount of hot water (not boiling) and whisk until smooth. This helps prevent clumps when you add the milk and ice later.
  3. Find the Right Bowl: Whisking matcha requires some space. A teacup won’t cut it, and a very shallow bowl can be tricky. If you don’t have a traditional matcha bowl, use something similar in size—deep enough for whisking but not too wide.
  4. No Whisk? No Problem!: If you don’t have a bamboo whisk, you can still prevent lumps. Pour a small amount of water over the matcha powder, stir or shake vigorously, then add the remaining water and stir again before adding milk and ice.
  5. Use Filtered Water: The quality of your water affects the taste. Always use filtered water to ensure your matcha has a clean, pure flavour.
  6. Sweeten to Taste: Matcha can have a naturally earthy taste, so feel free to sweeten it with honey, maple syrup, or vanilla syrup. You can also experiment with flavours like white chocolate or a splash of strawberry for a fun twist.
  7. Keep It Cold: To make your iced matcha latte as refreshing as possible, use cold milk (or plant-based alternatives like almond or oat milk) and plenty of ice. This will ensure a smooth, chilled drink.

Ingredients

  • 1–2.5 tsp matcha powder, adjust to taste
  • 1–2 tbsp hot water, for whisking the matcha
  • 1¼ cups warm water
  • 2 teaspoons maple syrup or honey, sweeten to taste (note: honey may not be considered vegan).
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract, optional
  • Nondairy milk of choice, oat milk (my personal favourite!), almond milk, and cashew milk are all great options

method

  1. In a measuring cup or small bowl, add the matcha powder. Pour in the hot water and vanilla extract (if using), then whisk vigorously until the matcha is fully dissolved and forms a smooth paste. This ensures the matcha blends evenly into the rest of the drink.
  2. Pour in the remaining 1¼ cups of water and mix well until fully combined. Place the mixture in the fridge for 15–20 minutes to chill.
  3. Fill two glasses with ice. Froth your choice of milk and pour it into each glass until ¾ full.
